ARTIST STATEMENT
As a painter, my art is founded in the image of women. My approach to the female figure is abstract and highly stylized. Through geometric shapes, vivid colors and strong lines I create captured imaginative scenes. The compositions hold elements of both urban and ethereal post-cubist space. The figures’ faces remain unidentified, anonymous; they are defined through their bodies as my muses: dancers, models, singers and dress forms for whom I design. The female figures portray playful, elegant and sensual forms. I design these bodies, clothes and scenes following my mood. I begin a piece with an idea or specific image of which the painting will express. However, my process always leads to my yielding control to the paint and where it inspires me to go.

Each composition alludes to my steady interest in blending fine art and design, which highly influence both the subjectivity and space of each piece. My chromatic solution, decorative design and the composition of space, is certainly influenced by the tradition of Modern European painting. However, I believe that my work expresses that of an American Metropolitan artist.

City Dance on V & M

This acrylic on raw black canvas was painted in 2003 by the Brooklyn-based artist, Josana Blue (1977- ).  Entitled “City Dance”, this large (58″ by 52″) work depicting abstracted, nude female figures is a magnificent example of Josana’s distinctive figurative style. Josana has a BFA from West Virginia University, and MA from New York University. Over the past ten years she’s had three solo shows in Manhattan galleries, and has participated in numerous group exhibitions throughout New York city. In addition to painting, she has also acquired a following for her freelance creative work in fashion and interior design, including work in windows and interiors for the Polo Ralph Lauren flagship stores in Manhattan.

Josana Blue Abstract Figurative Acrylic Painting – Nude Female Portrait

This beautiful untitled acrylic on canvas by Josana Blue (1977- ) depicts an abstracted reclining nude female in the odalisque style. The painting is one of only twenty-six works of art chosen for the juried exhibition, “NYU Venice 1974-2011, Artists and Angiola Churchill”,  celebrating the best work of over 1,000 alumni of the NYU Venice campus, and the contributions of Professor Dr. Angiola Churchill.  The exhibition runs from May 24th to June 9th, 2012, at the 80WSE Gallery on the campus of New York University.

Over the past ten years Josana has had three solo shows in Manhattan galleries, and has participated in numerous group exhibitions throughout New York City. In addition to painting, she has acquired a following for her freelance creative work in fashion and interior design, including work in windows and interiors for the Polo Ralph Lauren flagship stores in Manhattan. Josana received a performance grant scholarship and BFA from West Virginia University.  In 2003 she was awarded first prize in the juried competition, “Clara Scarampella & The Americans”, in Venice, Italy. Josana received her MA with concentrations in painting and studio art from New York University.

Through NYU Steinhardt’s Department of Art and Arts Professions, the NYU Venice Summer Studio Art Master’s program began in 1974 and helped to pioneer the university’s study abroad programs. Founded by NYU Art Department faculty member and chair Professor Angiola Churchill, the program ran every summer in Venice for 37 years. Blending art theory, history, and practice, the program took advantage of its unique location at the intersection of the ancient and modern worlds.

Beginning May 24 at Steinhardt’s 80WSE Gallery located between West 4th St. and Washington Place, the two-week exhibition will represent a small cross-section of the talent and achievements of NYU’s Venice Summer Studio Art graduates.

“I have had the great pleasure of working in the NYU Venice Summer MA in Studio Art program for the past six years,” said David Darts, current chair of the department. “I am dedicated to continuing the study abroad and art education legacy – a blending of theory, history, and art practice at the intersection of the ancient and contemporary worlds – that Professor Angiola Churchill developed and nurtured over the last 37 years.”

AES Gallery is pleased to present “Recurrent”, an exhibition of paintings that explores the human figure by New York based artists Pietrapiana, Josana Blue and Costain.

The human figure has been a subject of constant interest for artists throughout the ages. With the use of line and color to give a physical form to the self, artists have embarked in a quest that has helped to continue asking the question of who we are, while keeping a visual record of that experience.

In “Recurrent”, artists Pietrapiana, Josana Blue and Costain retake that quest through three distinctive visual perspectives.

Pietrapiana’s warm colors and organic shapes create human figures longing for communion but isolated in a sea of individualism. The proximity of the forms simultaneously creates a sense of intimacy and oppression.

Josana Blue with her geometric shapes and strong use of color and line creates forms that present the human figure as an elegant and very sensual form alluring to her constant interest of blending fine arts and design.

Costain’s use of blurry lines and distorted forms represents an individual in constant flux. The forms come in and out of focus allowing the viewer to reflect on the essence of the self and our sense of permanency.
